Christmas Carol Concert 2022
One of the final events of the hall for 2022 was the annual Christmas Carol Concert, held on the 6th of December. The service was treated to performances by the Somnium Chamber Choir, made up of current students and alumni from the University of Manchester and the Royal Northern College of Music.
The service also saw the rededication of the chapel by the Rt. Rev’d Mark Davies, Bishop of Middleton and the licensing of our new Chaplain, Fr. Daniel Valentine, who has joined us as a member of the hall this year (and faithful readers of the newsletter will remember he was introduced in our last issue).
The service also saw the reading of the winning poem from this years Christmas poetry competition. Third year student, Samuel Houghton, read his poem Love Walks Twice, a contemplation on our connection with Go, one another, and the importance and enduring power of love.
Attendees got all this and mince pies and mulled wine to boot! A fine way to bring 2022 to a close!
The Rejuvenation of the New Year
The New Year is a time of resolutions to change for the better, a chance for a fresh start, and the renewal of all things. We must express our greatest gratitude to many members of the alumni community who have helped us to do this through the restoration of the hall’s credence table.
Following the Remembrance Service in November, the Association launched an appeal for donations to restore the credence table which was originally commissioned along with the lectern in remembrance of those members of hall who had been killed during the First and Second World Wars.
Shortly after the appeal was launched, it quickly reached its goal of £500 due to the generosity of our alumni community and now holds a proud place in the hall’s chapel—a restoration of the tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice. We extend our greatest thanks to all who supported the appeal and made this possible.
